PJM capacity auction results
The clearing price for keeping generation available across the largest US grid region

Delivery year 2026/2027 cleared at a record $329.17 per megawatt-day, roughly 22% above the previous record, announced 22 July 2025. Capacity costs are recovered from customers across the footprint, which is why this number reaches households without any action by your own utility.

Independent market monitor analysis
Attributes how much of an auction increase traces to data centre demand

The monitor's analysis of the 2025/2026 auction attributed the majority of the increase to data centre load, amounting to billions of dollars recovered from customers in a single year. We cite the direction and the order of magnitude; the exact figure belongs in the monitor's own report.

EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook
Official US average residential electricity price projections

Average US residential price around 18.02 cents per kilowatt hour for 2026, against about 17.29 cents for 2025. A national average — your own region can move very differently, which is what the decomposer is for.

Your state public utility commission
Where retail rates are actually decided, and where public comment is accepted

Docket search, pending rate cases, and any large-load or data centre tariff filing. This is the single most useful link on the page and it is different for every reader, so we point rather than guess.

The counter-evidence

Electric Power Research Institute
Research finding that data centre growth was associated with lower average retail prices

From 2015 to 2024, average retail electricity prices decreased by about 3.5% for every doubling of data centre capacity — large steady loads spread fixed network costs across more kilowatt hours. We print this alongside the PJM number because a page that shows only one of them is arguing, not reporting.

Eurostat household electricity prices

Published half-yearly. We link the series rather than reprinting figures that change every six months, and we prefer it to campaign numbers from any side of the argument.

Your national regulatory authority and grid operator
Network tariffs, connection policy and queue rules — where household share of reinforcement is set

Connection access has been the binding constraint in Europe: new data centre connections around Dublin and in parts of the Netherlands and Frankfurt have been restricted for years, and operators report multi-year queues for large connections. The tariff consultation is where the household share is decided.
